Research areas & research interest

  • Multiwavelength polarization lidar measurements
  • Aerosol optical properties and aerosol classification, with focus on long-range transported dust and smoke
  • Algorithm development for EarthCARE using the synergy of lidar and imager products
  • Combination of lidar retrievals of cloud-relevant aerosol properties such as cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) and ice nucleating particles (INP) with in situ measurements
  • Humidity studies of sea salt aerosol with lidar remote sensing

Current projects

  • EarthCARE – APRIL (Atmospheric Products from Imager and Lidar, ESA)
  • A-CARE (Technical assistance for EarthCARE-related research activities in combination with the A-Life field experiment)
  • A-LIFE (Absorbing aerosol layers in a changing climate: aging, lifetime and dynamics)
  • SALTRACE (Saharan Aerosol Long-Range Transport and Aerosol-Cloud Interaction Experiment)

Measuring Systems (constructed and supervised)

  • BERTHA (Backscatter Extinction Lidar-ratio Temperature Relative Humidity Profiling Apparatus) : Raman Polarization lidar with 3 wavelengths (3 backscatter, 3 extinction, 3 depolarization, water vapor, HSRL)
