All these techniques have been applied successfully during national and international field experiments, e.g. ACE-2, MINT, LACE, INDOEX, HOLME MOSS 99, AFS, EUROTRAC-2 (INTERCOMP2000), furthermore FEINSTAUB I and II). Additionally, important research projects in the AFO 2000 program were FEBUKO, BEWA 2000, and EFEU. Moreover, a project for the "Fördervereinigung Automobiltechnik" (FAT) concerning traffic contributions to particle pollution in street canyons, a project for the Umweltbundesamt (UBA) including the research station Melpitz, and a DFG project concerning the aerosol pollution in China (Beijing and Pearl River Delta) were concluded.
During the last years a series of projects were treated concerning different problems like source apportionment, long-range transport fractions, or the influence of wood burning on particle burden in the air.
Actually, several important projects like UFOPLAN, REGKLAM, or HACHI are in work and can be found at the end of this item. Additionally, a series of smaller projects is in work simultaneously.
The results of chemical analyses and mass closure are interpreted together with the physical characterisation data of PM, meteorological data and trajectories including modeling results to reach a possibly complete synopsis.
The joint working group "Aerosol Characterisation" formed by parts of the TROPOS Physics and Chemistry departments has been successful within the EU research programme to be elected as a "Marie Curie Ph.D. Student training site". Within this site European Ph.D. students can be hosted at the TROPOS during the years 2002 - 2006 for up to one year in order to be trained in physical and/or chemical aerosol characterisation. Successful candidates can be substantially supported during their stay.

Important projects of the last years:
In the period 01/2001 to 12/2003 the following joint projects were realised within the atmosphere research cluster (AFO 2000):
In the time of 07/2002 to 12/2005 a project for the "Fördervereinigung Automobiltechnik" (FAT) concerning traffic contributions to particle pollution in a busy street canyon was realised:
- Größenaufgelöste physikalische und chemische Bestimmung von elementarem und organischem Kohlenstoff in Nanopartikeln (FAT-Projekt)
The Final Report was published in the FAT-Schriftenreihe in 2007.
In the time of 09/2003 to 12/2004 a project for the Landesamt für Umwelt und Geologie Sachsen concerning the fine dust pollution in conurbations of Saxony (Feinstaub II) was realised:
In the time of 07/2004 to 06/2006 a project for the Umweltbundesamt concerning the caracterisation of aerosols (UBA-Melpitz) was realised:
- Feinstaubmessung; Charakterisierung des Aerosols im Messnetz des Umweltbundesamtes
In the time of 01/2003 to 12/2006 a DFG project concerning the characterisation of aerosol particles in China (Pearl River Delta and Beijing) was realised:
- Characterisation of the number and chemical size distribution as well as hygroscopicity of fine and ultrafine particles
in Beijing, China
- Pearl River Delta - measurement campaign
During August and September 2006, a measurement campaign was carried out on the campus of the Peking University (PKU) and a Yufa site as part of the DFG project "Characterisation number and chemical size distribution as well as the hygroscopicity of the fine and ultrafine particles in Beijing, China". The PKU site is in the northwest of Beijing and the Yufa site is 50 km southeast of Beijing. Size-resolved particle sampling (BERNER impactor, five stages within the range of Dp(aer) = 0.05-10 µm) were performed in parallel to physical measurements. The particle mass, inorganic ions, OC/EC and selected organic single compounds were determined. Immediately prior to the Beijing campaign, an intensive measuring campaign was performed in the Pearl River delta near Guangzhou (south China) during July 2006. This campaign was dedicated to the investigation of loaded air masses originating from Megacities (Guangzhou, Shenzen, Hong Kong) and special economic zones (Shenzen). The results of these measuring campaigns will be published in the Journal of Geophysical Research.
In the time of 09/2006 to 12/2007 a project initiated by the LfUG Saxonia for quantification of the PM10 long-range transport:
showed new insights in the identification and quantification of the PM10 long-range transport to the Saxonian conurbations where PM10 levels exceed the European Union limit value (50 µgm-3) more than 35 times a year. In addition, one background station was defined for each incoming flow sector (total three sectors), which can be used to relate an urban background and a traffic-loaded station using back trajectories. In this way it was possible to estimate the contributions of regional/long-distance, urban background and direct traffic influence. Dp(aer)= 0.05-10 µm) and it was evident, that situations of exceeding the threshold values were mostly coincident with easterly and south-easterly airstreams dominated by the long-range transport fraction.
In the time of 10/2007 to 03/2008 a project initiated by the LfULG Saxony
- Einfluss kleiner Holzfeuerungen auf die Immissionssituation
