F-BEACH 2014 (Forest Biological Emissions and Aerosol Chemistry)

An intensive field campaign took place in July 2014 at the research station of Bayreuth University (BayCEER) in Waldstein (Fichtelgebirge, Bayern). The main objectives of this campaign are focused on the influence of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOC) emitted by spruces to secondary organic aerosol formation and particle nucleation and growth. To do that a large setup of on-line and off-line instrumentations was deployed at the research site. A total of 4 different types of aerosol mass spectrometers were deployed to characterize the chemical composition of the aerosols in the size range of 3 nm to near 1 µm. Gas phase compounds were also measured using mass spectrometry to principally focused on the detection of the so-called Extremely Low-Volatile Organic Compounds (ELVOCs) and sulfuric acid which are both involved on the nucleation process as well as growth of the newly formed particles. In additions, off-lines samplers were also deployed at different levels of the 30 m high tower of the station to provide a vertical profile of BVOCs and a very comprehensive chemical composition of the particles from ground up to the summit of the canopy. A total of 3 German research institutes and universities were involves in this study as part of the Working-group for Atmospheric Chemistry of the German Chemist Association (Arbeitskreis Atmosphärische Chemie (AKAC) der Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker (GDCh)).
