Postdoctoral scientist (PostDoc) - COARSEMIX

Leipzig, 22.10.2018

The Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research e.V. (TROPOS) in Leipzig (Germany) is seeking a

Postdoctoral scientist (PostDoc)

to work on detailed numerical aerosol-cloud modeling to investigate ice formation in clouds. The position is part of a project titled "Combined active remote sensing and modeling of ice-nucleating particles and ice crystal flux" (COARSEMIX) which aims at providing detailed information about ice formation in clouds and the dynamic interaction between aerosols and clouds based on a combination of lidar and radart measurements and modeling. The project is funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft.

We seek a highly motivated post-doctoral researcher to work with the atmospheric model COSMO-SPECS. The main task will be to improve the description of mixed-phase microphysics in the model, develop a nesting option to enable cloud-resolving simulations for individual case studies, and perform simulations for cases observed in measurement campaigns above Cyprus and Punta Arenas (Chile). The advertised position is part of a framework for building up a new team for combined cloud modeling and observations at TROPOS. Participation in ongoing international field campaigns may be possible.

The position is limited to two years, starting ideally on 1. February 2019 or soon thereafter. The salary level is according to the German public service regulation (TV-L 13). The position is full-time, however part-time employment is possible. The position is located in the Modeling Department at TROPOS.

Applicants should have a PhD in meteorology or atmospheric physics and ideally have a strong background in cloud microphysics, atmospheric modeling and model development. The candidate should be willing to present the results at international conferences and to publish in peer-review journals. Fluent English in written and oral form is mandatory.

Female researchers are especially encouraged to apply. Among candidates of equal aptitude and qualifications, preference will be given to a disabled person.

Please send your application including a letter of motivation, CV, transcripts and contacts of 3 references until 30 November 2018 to:
