Postdoctoral Position (27 Month, salary level TV-L E13)

Leipzig, 26.10.2018

As part of the European Research Infrastructure IAGOS we offer a postdoctoral position at the Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research.

The Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research, Leipzig (TROPOS) and the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry, Mainz (MPIC) are two worldwide leading institutes for atmospheric research. As part of the European Research Infrastructure IAGOS (www.iagos.org/iagos-caribic/) we are carrying out regular aerosol and trace gas measurements on board a passenger aircraft of the German Lufthansa using an instrumented air-freight container. In order to enhance the measurement capability of the CARIBIC observatory, we recently developed a new aerosol mass spectrometer (CARIBIC-AMS) that became operational in summer 2018. In this context we offer a

for instrument maintenance and operation, data evaluation, and scientific data analysis. The successful applicant shall start her or his new job in summer 2019. The position is offered by the Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research, located in the Experimental Aerosol and Cloud Microphysics Department, however, place of work will be mainly the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry (Particle Chemistry Department) in Mainz, as the CARIBIC-AMS is maintained at MPIC.

Applicants should have a background in atmospheric physics or atmospheric chemistry, ideally in aerosol research and aerosol mass spectrometry. Experience in airborne measurements is desirable. Programming skills and fluent English in written and oral form is mandatory. The competence for team work is presumed.

The main tasks of the successful candidate will be

  • to take care for the measurement flights with the new aerosol mass spectrometer in the IAGOS-CARIBIC container,
  • to adapt and improve the automated instrument control software (support is at hand),
  • to establish measurement and data QA/QC procedures,
  • to implement or improve data evaluation procedures and software,
  • to evaluate the data and co-operate with the in-house modelling group at MPIC on data interpretation,
  • to publish the results of routine in-situ aerosol composition measurements.

We are offering the possibility to work in an interdisciplinary team, at two of the most renowned atmospheric research institutes in Germany. Part-time work down to 75% is possible. Among candidates of equal aptitude and qualifications, preference will be given to disabled persons. TROPOS is committed to increase the fraction of female scientists and particularly encourages qualified female scientists to apply.
