TROPOS is active in researching tropospheric aerosol particles in areas that are of critical relevance to global climate.

These are, on the one hand, sensitive ecosystems, i.e. areas that might change their characteristics by ongoing climate change:

  • Arctic areas
  • Subpolar Taiga and boreal forests

Further, we look at areas that are threatened by human impact, such as expanding agricultural and industrial land use:

  • Tropical rain forests
  • Developing countries
  • Deserts

We are also interested in areas where the aerosol polulations are especially long-lived:

  • Mountain areas (free troposphere)
