PhD student (m, f, d) for “CLOUD” project

The Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research (TROPOS) with its approximately 180 employees is an internationally renowned institution for interdisciplinary application-oriented fundamental research in the field of aerosols and clouds and their interaction with each other.

Currently, in the framework of the EU-funded Marie-Curie-Project CLOUD-DOC, TROPOS is expanding its efforts in the field of aerosol cloud interactions. In this context, the department "Experimental Aerosol and Cloud Microphysics", working group "Clouds", is looking for a

PhD student.

Your tasks:

  • Compilation and interpretation of existing Southern Hemisphere aerosol particle related data from various sources (literature, data banks, TROPOS collected) with special focus on cloud condensation nuclei (CCN)
  • Participation in new particle and CCN formation related experiments at the CERN-CLOUD chamber


  • Completed studies in meteorology, physics, mechanical/process engineering or a comparable field
  • Experimental experience in aerosol measurement technology and its application in field campaigns
  • Knowledge and experience in the fields of acquisition/processing of measurement data
  • Good programming skills in at least one programming language, preferably Python and C/C++
  • Open-m Open-minded, structured and result-oriented way of thinking and working
  • Confident handling of the English language, both written and spoken
