Atmospheric Aerosols

Atmospheric aerosol particles constitue only a very small mass fraction of the atmosphere. Yet, they exert phenomena that are clearly evident to the human eye (visibility degradation), and cause significant effects on global climate.

The International Panel on Climate Change has identified the atmospheric aerosol as one of the major uncertain parameters that hamper future climate projections (IPCC, 2013).

TROPOS ist one of the few research institutes that dedicates its major efforts to elucidate atmospheric processes related to aerosol particles.

Our activities involve experimental investigations from worldwide measurement sites (in situ and remote sensing) and model simulations on different atmospheric scales.
