Scientist (m, w, div, n.a.) position on multiphase chemistry modeling
Leipzig, 27.03.2026
The Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research is a research institute of the Leibniz Association and an internationally renowned institute in the field of aerosol and cloud research.
The Atmospheric Chemistry Department (ACD) undertakes world-leading studies in multiphase atmospheric chemistry including air quality and climate related topics linking state-of-the-art-laboratory work and field experiments through advanced modeling. We are looking for a motivated and productive scientist to work on multiphase chemistry modeling topics. A focus will be on a project on the development and application of chemical mechanisms and its application in atmospheric multiphase models.
Main Tasks:
Development of atmospheric chemical mechanisms with a focus on aerosol, fog and cloud chemistry
Apply neural networks with CAPRAM and integrate neural networks into CAPRAM modelling
Summarize, update and continue the existing CAPRAM work on objective chemical reaction mechanism reduction
Conduct numerical intensive CAPRAM modeling in size-resolved mode with emphasis on heterogeneous reactions at the air-liquid water interface described by CAPRAM-HET
Conduct multiphase chemistry simulations with detailed chemical mechanisms and coupled microphysics-chemistry models
Complex analyses, processing and visualization of model output data by numerical data analysis languages such as Python, Julia, or R
Modeling and interpretation of field measurement data
Support the CAPRAM team
Interact with the other collaborating scientists, take part in meetings and discussions
Write project reports, present the results at scientific international conferences, and publish results in scientific journals
Requirements and Skills:
Higher scientific education with at least a Master's or a PhD degree in meteorology, physics, chemistry, environmental sciences, computer science or related disciplines
Knowledge in multiphase modeling, neural networks, machine learning, mechanism reduction and size-resolved multiphase chemistry modeling
Knowledge in atmospheric chemistry and atmosphere-climate interactions would be beneficial
Expertise and experience in numerical modeling including experience with at least one higher programming language (e.g., FORTRAN, C++, …)
Sound knowledge and experience in the use of numerical data analysis languages, e.g. R or Python
Knowledge and experience in the use of scripting languages (bash) in Linux/Unix environment as well as in the use of cdo/nco and handling netcdf/hd5 files
High intrinsic motivation, ability to work both independently and as well as part of the team
Very good written and spoken command of English
Very good paper writing skills
Willingness and strong motivation to design and write cutting-edge research proposals for the bouquet of national and international funding agencies TROPOS ACD applies to. ECRs are explicitly invited to apply
