Student Assistant – High- Performance Computing (HPC)

The Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research (TROPOS), located in the Science Park of Leipzig, is an internationally renowned institution for interdisciplinary application-oriented fundamental research in the field of aerosols and clouds and their interaction with each other.
One topic of interest is the investigation of cloud microphysical processes in turbulent fluid fields – by performing direct numerical simulations. In this context, we are looking for a motivated student assistant to support a DFG-funded research project in this field.

The main tasks include:

  • Assisting with simulation workflows on an external HPC cluster 

  • Monitoring simulation jobs and helping to organize simulation outputs 

  • Organizing and maintaining simulation metadata 

  • Assisting with post-processing and visualization of simulation data using Python

 

Requirements:

  • Current enrollment in Physics, Atmospheric Sciences, Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related field 

  • Basic programming experience (preferably Python) 

  • Basic Linux command-line skills 

  • Interest in scientific computing and data analysis 

  • Experience with HPC systems, Bash scripting, or Git is advantageous but not required

 

The ideal starting date would be 01.10.2026. 

 

The position offers flexible working hours and the opportunity to gain experience in scientific computing and numerical simulations.
