Scientific employee (PostDoc, f/m/d) for agricultural dust aerosol modelling AiRisk

Leipzig, 20.04.2026

The Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research is a research institute of the Leibniz
Association and an internationally renowned institute in the field of aerosol and cloud research.

As part of the ‘AiRisk – Network on Airborne Infection Risk’ collaborative project, funded by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR), the sub-project based at the Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research is investigating the airborne dispersion of dust aerosol particles from agricultural sources using numerical model simulations. The aim of the project is to gain insights into atmospheric transport pathways depending on emission scenarios and meteorological conditions, and thus to understand the release of dust aerosols from agricultural activity into the environment.

The main research focus of the future position holder will be the further development of a Lagrangian particle dispersion model (trajectory model) in order to assess the release of dust aerosols from various agricultural activities and wind, and their dispersion, to quantify the release of dust aerosols into the environment, and examining its relevance within the context of the planetary health concept.

The following tasks frame the project:

  • Conducting numerical simulations of the emission and airborne dispersion of dust aerosol particles from agricultural activity

  • Further development of an atmospheric trajectory model with regard to the representation of various emission mechanisms

  • Analysis and evaluation of various emission scenarios and meteorological conditions determining transport pathways

  • Active participation in an interdisciplinary collaborative project

We are looking for an early career postdoctoral scientist with a doctoral degree in meteorology and practical experience in the field of dust aerosol modelling. Excellent programming skills and experience with UNIX/Linux-based computing environments are desirable. Excellent written and spoken English and an interest in interdisciplinary work are also desirable. Knowledge of German is an advantage.

The ideal starting date would be 1st June 2026, with a fixed term to 31st May 2030.

We offer you an exciting job with a varied activity in an interdisciplinary working environment and a variety of work and family offers as well as flexible working hours and daycare places.
The employment is temporary and includes a part / full-time position with 40 hours/week. It is a remuneration in accordance with TV-L pay group 13, including the attractive social benefits of the public sector.

TROPOS values the diversity of its employees and pursues the goals of equal opportunity. The institute aims to increase the proportion of female employees in scientific and science-related positions and therefore specifically encourages female candidates to apply. People with disabilities (“Schwerbehinderung” according to Book IX of the German Social Code) have priority in the hiring process if they have the same suitability, aptitude and professional qualifications.
