Guangzhou (China). On 16 September 2026, Professor Hartmut Herrmann from TROPOS and the Leipzig University visited the State Key Laboratory for Advanced Environmental Technology (SKLAET) in Guangzhou and gave a scientific lecture entitled ‘Multiphase Cloud Research: Laboratory, Field and Modelling’. The invitation came from Professor Xinming Wang of the Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry at the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The lecture attracted considerable interest from numerous researchers and PhD students.
In his presentation, Professor Herrmann outlined his team’s work on the multiphase chemistry of clouds and the atmosphere. He discussed laboratory research, field observations and model simulations. Using specific research examples, he demonstrated the experimental set-up for reactions in the aqueous phase, as well as methods for controlling and measuring the concentration of dissolved oxygen. He also outlined several research approaches that combine laboratory experiments, field observations and model analyses.
Following the presentation, researchers from the institute held in-depth discussions with Professor Herrmann on topics such as atmospheric multiphase chemistry, reaction research in the aqueous phase, and the integration of experiments and models. Finally, Professor Herrmann toured the Institute’s laboratories, learnt about the research platforms and the progress of research, and posed for a photograph with the researchers in front of the sample building.
Guangzhou, also known as Canton, is a megacity in the south of the People’s Republic of China. The city itself has a population of around 16 million; the metropolitan area in the Pearl River Delta has a total population of around 65 million. This also includes megacities such as Hong Kong and Shenzhen. It is the most populous metropolitan area in China. The heavily industrialised region is also known as the ‘world’s factory’.
