TROPOS mourns the loss of its founding director Prof. Dr. Peter Warneck

Prof. Dr. Peter Warneck, founding director of the Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research (TROPOS, formerly IfT), died on 4 June 2019 at the age of 91. Mr. Warneck headed the institute from its foundation in 1991 to 1993, during this time he successfully implemented the scientific orientation developed by the founding commission led by Prof. Hans Hinzpeter and, in particular, established the new departments "Physics of the Atmosphere" and "Modelling of Atmospheric Processes" alongside the existing "Chemistry of the Atmosphere" department and the workshops. With the recruitment of the new staff Mr. Warneck succeeded in securing the technical objectives as well as the provision of a broad competence for the future tasks of the institute.

Mr. Warneck managed the institute with caution and treated all employees with great respect.

Even after his departure from the institute, Mr. Warneck, as a member of the institute’s association, was still very interested in the Institute until his old age. We will always keep him in honourable remembrance.
